More Maths

If you haven't already watched this video on NZMaths - when you have a spare 17 minutes take a look. They use the talk moves in these maths groups as they unpack the problems. Talk Moves

Image
I am sure you have all seen some version of the 'Talk Moves' I have been using these heaps with my group (Year 5s) and in class. They inspire more talk and more explanation at maths time from student to student and student to teacher. It takes the focus off the answer being all important and ensure students know what they are doing and how they are doing it. Great for word problems. Focus on a couple at a time.... Wait time is a good start point and revoicing. This is a good article too:  http://www.mathsolutions.com/documents/9780941355537_ch2.pdf I have found that sometimes you can have quite a lengthy conversation and debate about a concept like a tidy number and you will often uncover misconceptions. Gotta love a tidy number!  If you want I will laminate you a A4 poster for the classroom. It would be good to get the students familiar with the talk moves school wide.  Lizzie

Youblisher - Create e-books for your class blogs

Hi everyone, David Kinane introduced us to Youblisher..... it will create e-books for you from a word document. Children need to have typed up a story, added pictures, a title, author and then page breaks for all the pages they want. Then you need to create a PDF - File -> Export->Create a PDF. In Youblisher all you need to do is upload the PDF and voila. http://www.youblisher.com/p/1195046-Francesca/ And then you can copy and embed the code into your blog and you have a book. http://team2kowhai.blogspot.co.nz/2015/08/time-to-see-our-new-spaces-by-stella.html Let me know if you want me to give you a run through. We are trying to include this as part of our reading tasks so the children have an authentic audience. Lizzie

Growth Mindset vs Fixed Mindset

The Difference between Fixed & Growth Mindset. This is an interesting article looking at how students deal with problems, but it is also pretty topical for all teachers as we go through a period of change in the sector. Opening to the article: When you fail, what is your thought process? Do you feel like you let yourself down because you didn’t have innate ability? Instead, do you feel like you just haven’t learned enough yet? Based on your answers, you might be able to easily distinguish between having a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset. This is a critical thing to understand for anyone looking to better understand how they learn and how they let themselves learn.....

Converting a PowerPoint into a Movie File

Image
Why? I here you ask. To make it easier to share is the main answer. Changing the PowerPoint into video makes it easier to put on your team blog or in a videos file on your students desktop so they can view each others work.

Yes! My Family Doctors Surgery burned down last week! But not before he had the opportunity to give me some helpful hints for winter. If you are feeling congested: Eat Wasabi Peas! And he also preaches about Olive Leaf and Ivy Leaf. Both available at the chemist or a health food store. He recommends Comvita. So if you are feeling like your immune may be low... I would stock up! To Change The Flag Or Not Change The Flag?

Image
There is a lot of talk in the media and I imagine, amongst ourselves and within our community about the importance of changing our flag. However if we are going to change our flag I like this one! Personal, I know but I thought I would share it. I have been a bit anti the whole 'change the flag' campaign, but it seems it is here and it is happening so we might as well get amongst it! What do you think? Author: Lizzie
