Digi Digest 12

Happy New Year 2020!

A big year for digital technology at Bayfield with the new curriculum and our Digital PD commencing throughout the year.

As you know.......
From January 2020 all schools are expected to be implementing the new Digital Technologies (DT) curriculum content for students in Years 1 to 10.

The curriculum content incorporates two new strands in the Technology learning area:

- Computational Thinking
- Designing and Developing Digital Outcomes.

These strands have staged progress outcomes to indicate the minimum achievement expected for students operating at different levels of the New Zealand Curriculum. The rationale for the new curriculum content is to ensure that all students up to Year 10 experience sufficient opportunities to develop their understanding and capabilities about digital technologies. The intent is they become designers and not just users of technology and equip them for their future. If you are interested in finding out more the Ministries' https://kiatakatu.ac.nz/ is a great resource to check out.

PD Update

Bevan and Nat have already met with Kirstin Hensman our new Digital PD provider. She is an across school leader at Kohimarama School with many year☐s experience incorporating Digital Technology into programmes across all levels. PD will run similarly to Lucie Cheesman with ambassadors and teams having time with her outside the classroom to plan and model practical ideas enabling you to meet the requirements of the new DT curriculum. PD will commence at the teacher only day on May 29th, Term 2.

In the meantime..........

Digital Citizenship Week : 23-27 March (week 8)

As we begin to use our devices and incorporate digital Technology into our programmes it is a great time to set up safe practices and guidelines.  We all know the importance of Digital Citizenship. Learning should start as early as possible, ideally when one starts actively using games, social media or any digital device. Check out this diagram that outlines a Digital Intelligence Framework.

Check these resources in the link below from Common Sense that will help to introduce Digital Citizenship to your teams.

For the first time in 2020 we have partnered with NZ’s leading provider of cyber safety and digital-awareness services to school communities - Family Zone.

Family Zone provides a broad suite of cyber safety services that help school communities keep kids safe online.
They provide tools to further support the school’s monitoring systems and helps families to gain visibility and management over children’s internet access, regardless of internet connection. Their unique ecosystem allows school communities to work collaboratively so students are safe online on all devices and all networks, all the time.
You’ll receive more information regarding Family Zone in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, please read the information below to understand how Family Zone will help the school community to keep kids safe online.

On the School Network
A Family Zone School Manager will provide visibility and management when students are
connected to the school network during school hours. This will help keep students safe and focussed online. To access the internet via the school network student's devices must be protected by the Mobile Zone application.

Off the School Network During School Hours
Family Zone’s Mobile Zone application can keep kids safe when they choose to use unsafe networks (eg mobile data), during school hours. Mobile Zone will enforce the school’s acceptable ICT usage policy and prevent students from accessing inappropriate content. Any device a student brings to school needs to be protected by the Mobile Zone app.
For Families Outside School Hours
Parents can choose to use Family Zone Insights outside of school hours to monitor internet usage on up to 6 devices with Mobile Zone activated. Insights provides snapshots of usage and detailed reports, along with visibility into installed apps and device location (when activated by parents).
